Surmiran is a dialect of Romansh language spoken in the Gelgia and Albula/Alvra valleys, including Surses and Sutses. Sutsilvan and Surmiran are sometimes grouped together as Central Romansh (Grischun central), and then grouped together with Sursilvan as Rhenish Romansh (in German, Rheinischromanisch). Romansh was mentioned by 3,038 people within the historically Surmiran-writing area (44%) as a habitually spoken language in the census of 2000.
