Norwegian (Norsk) is a North Germanic language spoken mainly in Norway, where it is one of the two official languages (besides Sami). It is closely related to other Scandinavian languages like Swedish and Danish. Norwegian has a distinct pronunciation with a tonal accent and melodic intonation, which sets it apart from Swedish and Danish. Norwegian also has fewer vowel sounds than Danish, but more than Swedish.
The vocabulary in Norwegian has some similarities to Swedish and Danish, but there are also significant differences. Norwegian has a higher degree of Germanic influence, with many loanwords from German, while Swedish has a more prominent influence from Latin and French. Danish has a lot of words borrowed from Low German.
Written Norwegian has two official standards, Bokmål and Nynorsk. Bokmål is based on the written language of Danish, while Nynorsk is based on traditional rural dialects.
